The Creation of Adam was created by Michelangelo circa 1511 after being commissioned to paint the roof of the Sistine Chapel. The painting illustrates the story of Genesis and God giving life to man. In this painting, Adam is the ideal young man based on classical Greek and Roman values. Adam is physically alive but lacks the human spirit that will come once God touches him. The fingers nearly touching leaves the painting electric in tension and creates structure. God and Adam mirror each others position which portrays that Man is created to resemble God. It is thought that the woman who God has his arm around is Adams future wife Eve. This painting is one of the most recognizable in the Western world and is still parodied to this day.
